Hirta is the largest Island in the St Kilda archipelago and is situated 40 miles west of the Outer Hebrides. It was inhabited from pre-historic times until its evacuation in the 1930s. Tom Steel’s book ‘The Life and Death of St Kilda’ provides an informative account of the archipelago, its history and subsequent evacuation. Like Foula, Hirta has a fascinating geology and beguiling form.
