The practice was invited to submit proposals for a harbour master’s building in Paddington Basin, a section of the Grand Union Canal in London. The surrounding area is being developed to provide offices at high level with a mixture of retail, cafés and bars on the quayside. A small building was required by the Waterways Board to administer moorings and offer information to passers by - the building would also incorporate a small store for canoes. In addition a new retractable bridge was required for enhanced access. A double skin structure was proposed: the core of the building would be constructed of low key materials to a simple weathered envelope; a more elaborate outer skin wraps round it providing a highly decorative outer façade. The bridge adopts the language of the building, it sits on a simple pivot allowing it to open and close for passing boats.
