This design for a footbridge over the Rochdale Canal in New Islington, Manchester, was selected onto a shortlist of 4 from a field of 83 other designs in a recent RIBA open competition. A new masterplan for New Islington proposes a new arm of canal creating a ‘T’ junction; the new footbridge would be sited over this junction. The footbridge would be of composite steel construction similar to the wind shelter, it would be delivered to site in five pieces, assembled on the quayside and then hoisted into position in a single lift.
